How long do Pantry Spices and Herbs Keep?
When is the last time you have done a spring cleaning of your spice and herb pantry? We like to keep our spices in a dry and dark space.
Currently, we have 2 sections in our kitchen for spices and such since we do so much international cooking. We have our Asian spices and shelf worthy condiments on one large multilevel cabinet and all our Western, Middle Eastern and European Spices in the other.
One sure fire way to change up your kitchen routine is to add a few new dried spices to that kitchen wardrobe of yours. However, be sure to change out and exchange them according to the directives below.
- Ground spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric): 2 to 3 years
- Herbs (basil, oregano, parsley): 1 to 3 years
- Seasoning blends: 1 to 2 years
- Whole spices (cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon sticks): 4 years
- Seeds: 4 years (however poppy and sesame seeds should be discarded after 2 years as they can go rancid)
- Extracts: 4 years

Nourish your Body
With the change of seasons upon us, it is time to give yourself a little extra TLC (tender loving care). Adding some warming spices like ginger and garlic and adding healthy antioxidants like turmeric gives our body the proper defense and protection it needs around the start of the school season. A little extra boost of protein from the turkey and garbanzo beans is a plus as well. Try serving with a side of Instant Pot Black Rice Pilaf for an extra boost of antioxidants.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is believed that eating warmed cooked food is best for your spleen. Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Curry is the perfect recipe for a weakened spleen qi or a deficiency. Be sure to read our Feed the Spleen: Nourish the Body to find out why it is important to eat warm cooked foods instead of raw cold foods.
Stove top vs Pressure Cooker (Instant Pot)
We used the simple and easy stove top method to cook our Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Curry for 2 reasons.
- By the time your instant pot comes up to pressure, you are essentially already done cooking it on the stove top.
- Pressure cooking your chopped sweet potatoes even on low time and low pressure causes them to break apart and we wanted ours in distinct little cubes. However, we love cooking chopped sweet potatoes in soup because when they do break apart it makes the soup really creamy and delicious like in our Creamy Thai Sweet Potato Chicken soup.

Good day! I want to try this recipe it sounds yummy! Question... which curry have you used / do you recommend using with this recipe? Panang or traditional red? Would you use any other? Thank you!
HWC Magazine says
Hi there Jeannine! Our turkey sweet potato curry has more of an Indian spice profile going on so we used a mild dried ground Indian Curry spices with the main ingredients being -coriander, cumin, turmeric, black pepper, chili powder and ginger. Turkey is not a 'big' protein in Australia. The only festive day like your multiple autumnal ones plus Yule we have is the latter . . . seafood and ham or pork are far more oft the choice. But one can certainly buy turkey mince at the supermarket - perchance I should or change it for chicken ! Since mild 'curries' do not 'do' it for me perhaps I should just add judiciously, madly tasting along the line . . . certainly shall try !!! thanks !
HWC Magazine says
If we were living in Australia we would be making every recipe, even our sweet potato curry with delicious Australian lamb and fresh seafood, hands down the best. But when you can't find delicious Auzzie lamb---you resort to plain old ground turkey or ground chicken or whatever might be available at the moment. Hope the new year is treating you well dear friend. Take Care

Thank you Betty! We are all about cook once and eat twice. Curries are always better the second day as it gives it time for the flavors to mingle.
